Mr. Rakesh Banik

The Wheel Changed his Life

He can live with failure, but not with ‘not trying’. Cycling’s been a blessing in disguise, but it hasn’t always been a cakewalk.

His greatest feat today remains the track from Bangkok to Guwahati with one cause at heart- SAVE RHINOS. Being the world’s first para cyclist to fight for such a cause led him to believe his disability isn’t his disadvantage, but rather the push to strive for greater feats. And again, the zeal and spirit pushed him to conquer the world’s highest motorable road, Khardung La, in Ladakh in 2016.

Those, unfortunately, weren’t the only battles to be won. Depression is real and he has felt those heavy pangs of despair. But he decided not to bow to it and marched forward to beat it right after his amputation. And today, raising awareness on this social stigma is parallel to his existence.
